Hey there!
You’re probably reading this because you’ll be a guest at a wedding we’ll be DJ’ing and the bride and groom have welcomed requests in advance.
As their DJs, we want to make this job a little easier for you.
So here are some tips on how to pick the best wedding guest requests.
If you’re not interested in the science just scroll down to the bottom for our Top 500 Most Requested Wedding Bangers.
You probably won’t like all of them because music is subjective and if we all liked the same things life would be boring.
But you could always try having a drink or two and seeing if you like them a bit more!
If you would like the DJs perspective about how to create a great party atmosphere please keep reading and we’ll share some insight.

It’s logical to assume if you invite guests to request songs they will all fill the dance floor.
In reality, not everyone is confident when it comes to music.
Around 80% do not engage with music and it’s just background in their life.
It’s why some radio stations play the same songs over and over, so whenever you listen you’ll hear a familiar tune.
At a wedding familiarity is important because you have a mix of all ages and tastes on the dance floor.
But familiarity doesn’t have to mean “same old tired wedding cheese”.
When you hear a track attached to a positive memory, your brain releases dopamine and you feel happy.
This is called “The nostalgia bounce” and it’s usually created by music attached to moments in your life between the ages of 15 to 25.
These are the songs which provided the soundtrack to the end of school, holidays abroad with your mates, the independence of getting a car or moving out and quite often falling in love.
Our DJs want to play tracks which have this effect on as many people in the room as possible, because
familiarity is essential to creating a really good party atmosphere.

A positive party atmosphere is created when people are having fun.
Alcohol will contribute to this and so will the psychological safety of being around people you feel comfortable with, like family and friends.
Music obviously has a BIG part to play and as DJ’s we’re good at knowing which songs will appeal to the crowd in front of us at any given moment.
This comes from years of experience backed up by the data from our “Tinder for party music” app which your bride and groom will have accessed to personalise their tastes.

Having the right set of songs will only get a DJ so far.
Knowing when to play them during the night is crucial.
Playing “the big party songs” too soon rarely works, so asking for Mr Brightside at half 7 when the evening guests who have just arrived and are still sober will not fill the floor like it will a few hours later.
If a couple has more niché tastes it might be better to play these tracks when older relatives have left it’s just your core friends on the dance floor.
Weeknight weddings have become popular and a good DJ will approach these differently, assuming a lot of people will look to leave at 10pm because they have work the next day.
In which case we’ll bring our big crowd pleasers forward to catch them before they go.
If there is a particular reason why a song is important (from the Stag or Hen weekend) highlight it to us and we will obviously wait until we can see the stags and hens in the room before we play it.
There are some circumstances which will hinder a party atmosphere.
With June weddings where it is still light at half 9 and 25 degrees we often find guests would often rather be on the decking socialising regardless of what we play.
At these times we might revert to playing songs to suit the mood and holding onto the best party songs until people are ready to dance.
Evening guests, a buffet or an absent bride and groom will also impact the atmosphere.
Most DJs will try and play your request as long as it doesn’t contradict the couples guidance.
Remember they’ve paid the bill so they are entitled to dictate what gets played.

As we said earlier, our aim is for everyone to have a brilliant night.
We also want to make it easy for you to make good music choices.
